The Carthage Humane Society wants to ensure each person who adopts a pet is aware of, and willing to, accept that responsibility.
Adopting from an animal shelter is most definitely the responsible, caring thing to do, but, before bringing a pet into your family, take a moment to consider the following important questions.
Things to Consider
Why do you want to adopt a companion animal? Ask yourself this simple question before you adopt.
Are you adopting a companion animal for yourself, your spouse, your child? Adopting a pet just because the kids have been asking for a puppy or kitten could end up being a big mistake. This new member of your family could be with you for many, many years.
Who will be primarily responsible for the care of your new family member? Pets require food, water, exercise, care and companionship every day.
Do any members of your family have allergies?
Are you prepared to deal with special problems that a pet can cause? Accidents happen for pets that aren't yet housetrained and veterinary expenses unfortunately are sometimes a part of pet ownership.
Can you afford a pet? Food, licenses, kitty litter, toys and other expenses can add up quickly.
Is your home suitable for the kind of pet you have in mind?
Are you an "active" family - on the go a lot? Some pets would enjoy being a part of this lifestyle, while others might be more laid back and content to lay quietly at home all day. For example, If your home doesn't have a backyard a dog that requires lots of outdoor time may not be the most suitable for your household.
Are you prepared to be a responsible pet owner? Licensing and leash laws are part of taking care of your new friend - not to mention the love and companionship your new pet hopes for in return.
There's a lot of questions, but taking time to consider them before you adopt can make a huge difference in many lives. The Carthage Humane Society, and shelter's across the nation, are full of adorable puppies and kittens who were taken home by people who hadn't thought through all the responsibilities of pet ownership before they adopted.
Are you prepared to keep and care for this pet for his or her entire life time? When you adopt a pet, you are making a lifetime commitment.
